Current and Planned Litters
Rookie x Sugar: Chesapeake Litter due March 20, 2011
We like our previous litter sired by Rookie so well, we have bred to him again, this time with Sugar (Oak Hill Brown Sugar). Sugar is a half-sister to Candy, the dam of our previous litter.
We expect these puppies to have plenty of drive, talent, trainability, and upbeat, outgoing temperaments, as well as good looks according to the breed standard. We seek to place them in homes where they will be pets and have a job. They were bred to be hunting companions and field-trial prospects, and we expect they will also do well at hunting tests, agility, obedience, and conformation showing.
Both parents have OFA hips and elbows. Rookie has his CERF eye clearance, and Sugar has tested "normal" and we are waiting for her number to be issued. Both parents are "clear" for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Rookie is tested Optigen Pattern A (clear) and Sugar is out of parents who both tested clear. Sugar is "clear" for degenerative myelopathy (DM). Rookie has not been tested for DM, but Sugar's status means puppies from this litter can never get DM. If you are interested in a breeding prospect and need a DM "clear" puppy, let us know. Testing the puppies is a possibility.
Sugar
Oak Hill Brown Sugar
Sugar is 65 lbs of dark brown athletic power, with outstanding speed, great lung capacity, and exceptional marking ability. When there are no birds to be retrieved, she converts to 65 lbs of affectionate wriggle. She is a reliable watchdog, always telling us when someone drives up, but has an outgoing, social-butterfly personality with a smile for everyone.
Oak Hill Brown Sugar
Sugar is out of our wonderful Oak Hill Blue Monday** by CH Whiskey Creek's Brown Trout, an athletic, talented marker with an exceptionally confident, outgoing personality. Her only littermate is her brother CH Oak Hill Preflast!, who is working at the Master/Qual level (and overdue to enter some events).
Rookie
Chesshar's Rookie
We are crazy about Rookie. We learned about him from trainer Pat Nolan, a good friend who described Rookie in glowing terms-talented, hard-going, tractable, an all-around joy to train. John went to see him and considers him the ideal Chesapeake. Rookie's job evokes tales of the market hunters' dogs of old-he works at a private game preserve on Maryland's Eastern Shore, where he frequently retrieves between 40 and 70 birds a day, many of them Canada geese. The going is difficult, with lots of mud and muck. Tough, game, and athletic, Rookie is also a house dog with a great personality.
Chesshar's Rookie
This matchup fits our ideals for a Chesapeake breeding, with emphasis on temperament, drive, and athletic ability, combined with talent, tractability, and good looks. We try to build pedigrees combining known producers with less-used lines, contributing something a little bit different to the pool of performance Chesapeakes. Sugar's sire Trout is a dog we discovered, whose background includes working show dogs. Her dam Monday is sired by a show dog who demonstrated awe-inspiring drive and temperament. Rookie's pedigree fits this project. He is sired by DC-AFC Rudy (Westwind's Rudy of Nordais), producer of many outstanding Chesapeakes, out of a dam whose breeding is half show lines, half gun dogs.
